Hurt Report: The Numbers Behind Motorcycling

Back in the 1980’s USC conducted a study, largely funded by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, about the statistics of riding a motorcycle in the greater Los Angeles area. This data draws determinations from over 3,600 motorcycle accidents in that geographic area. Despite what you may think, the name “Hurt Report” has nothing to do with injuries resulting from motorcycling, but rather the name of the lead researcher, Harry Hurt.

This report is where we get statistics such as:

  • 2/3 of MC accidents involving more than one vehicle are caused by another vehicle violating the MC’s right-of-way
  • Intersections are the most likely place for accidents to occur, along with short trips around the rider’s home
  • Other drivers not seeing a MC is the most likely cause of MC accidents
  • Chances of an accident are reduced significantly through the rider’s use of headlights and high-viz clothing/ colors.
  • 96% of all MC accident victims are Male
  • 92% of riders in accidents ha no formal training, or taught themselves to ride
  • Over 50% of MC accident victims have less than 5 months of seat-time on a motorcycle
  • The larger the displacement of the bike,the more severe the injuries to the rider
  • The average incident leaves a motorcycle rider with less than 2 seconds to observe, react, execute, and avoid the hazard.

Although the data is over 30 years old at this point, it still provides useful information for any current or future riders. This document should be considered “required reading” for anyone thinking of riding a motorcycle on the street.
