Ténéré 700 vs KLR 650: Is the Yamaha Worth the Extra Money?

Kit de protection de carter moteur pour Yamaha Ténéré 700 / T7 / T7 Rally

The Kawasaki KLR650 and the Yamaha Ténéré 700 both wear 21-inch front wheels and both are built to leave the pavement, but they come from very different philosophies. The KLR is a simple single-cylinder dual-sport with a big tank and a low price. The Ténéré 700 is a twin-cylinder adventure bike with more performance and more electronics. Here's how the KLR 650 vs Ténéré 700 compare, using the manufacturers' 2026 US specifications.

Quick Answer

  • Choose the KLR650 if your priorities are price, fuel range and simplicity.
  • Choose the Ténéré 700 if you want more power, more suspension travel, more ground clearance and modern rider aids.

Engine and Performance

The KLR650 uses a 652cc single-cylinder engine with a five-speed gearbox. Kawasaki claims 40 hp and 39.1 lb-ft (measured to ISO 4106). The current generation, introduced for 2022, is fuel-injected, unlike the carbureted KLR that ended in 2018.

The Ténéré 700 uses a 689cc parallel twin with a six-speed gearbox. Yamaha doesn't publish US horsepower figures, but Cycle World's dyno test of a 2023 Ténéré 700 measured 61.7 hp at the rear wheel. For an apples-to-apples comparison, Cycle World's dyno test of a 2022 KLR650 Adventure measured 34.61 hp at the rear wheel. On those two tests, the Ténéré 700 made roughly 27 hp more.

Weight

On paper, the two weigh almost the same: 456.2 lb curb for the base KLR650 without ABS and 459 lb wet for the Ténéré 700. Keep in mind the KLR carries 6.1 gallons of fuel versus 4.2 gallons for the Yamaha, which affects how much of each bike's weight is fuel.

Range and Simplicity

The KLR650's 6.1-gallon tank is its biggest practical advantage over the Ténéré 700's 4.2 gallons. For long stretches between gas stations, that extra capacity matters. The KLR's equipment is also simpler: Kawasaki lists ABS as its only rider aid, and it's optional on the base model.

Off-Road Capability

The Ténéré 700 has more front suspension travel (8.3 in vs 7.9 in) and more ground clearance (9.4 in vs 8.3 in). It also has switchable traction control and ABS modes that let you turn ABS off at the rear or at both wheels. These features make the Yamaha the more capable machine in technical terrain.

Price

The KLR650 starts at $6,999 for 2026 ($7,299 with ABS), while the Ténéré 700 lists at $10,999. That $4,000 difference can buy a lot of gear, luggage and protection.
