Yamaha Ténéré 700 Protection Guide: Crash Bars, Skid Plates & Guards (2019–2025)

Radiator guard for the Yamaha Ténéré 700

The Yamaha Ténéré 700 is a mid-size adventure bike designed with serious off-road riding in mind. But "tough" doesn't mean indestructible. The T7 is built to be ridden off-road, and the bikes that actually go off-road come back with scratches, dents and, sometimes, a cracked radiator.

This guide covers the full protection picture for the Ténéré 700 from 2019 to 2025, starting with the most searched part, Ténéré 700 crash bars: crash bars, skid plates, radiator and headlight guards, hand guards and the small parts that riders often forget until they break.

Where the Ténéré 700 Gets Damaged

Before buying parts, it helps to know where the damage happens. On the T7, the most common problem areas are:

  • The radiator: it sits behind the 21-inch front wheel and takes direct hits from rocks and mud.
  • The engine cases: the CP2 parallel twin's side covers are exposed in a tip-over.
  • The bottom of the engine: exposed to rocks, logs and ledges.
  • The headlight cluster: the quad-LED front end is distinctive, but replacing it is not cheap.
  • Levers and hands: the first things to hit the ground in a fall.

Crash Bars for the Ténéré 700

Crash bars are the most searched protection part for the T7, and for good reason. In a tip-over, they hold the bike off the engine cases and the tank area, and they give you something solid to grab when lifting the bike.

When you compare T7 crash bars, look at:

  • Upper vs lower bars: lower bars protect the engine; upper bars also protect the tank and fairing area. Upper bars add weight, so decide based on how often you ride technical terrain.
  • Compatibility with your skid plate: some bars tie into the skid plate mounts. Make sure the two parts are designed to work together.
  • Model year: the 2025 Ténéré 700 received updates, so double-check fitment for your year.

If you're still deciding between crash bars and lighter protection, read our crash bars vs frame sliders guide. For an adventure bike like the T7, we recommend crash bars.

Skid Plate: Protecting the Bottom of the Engine

The stock T7 comes with a basic plastic skid plate that covers only part of the underside, so many owners upgrade to a larger aluminum or HDPE skid plate that wraps further around the engine. If you ride rocky trails, a stronger skid plate is one of the first upgrades to consider.

Things to check: the thickness of the aluminum, whether it protects the linkage, how easy it is to remove for oil changes, and whether it leaves enough airflow around the engine.

Radiator Guard: Small Part, Big Insurance

A punctured radiator is one of the few failures that can stop your ride on the spot, far from help. A radiator guard keeps stones and branches out of the core while letting air through.

Our radiator guard for the Yamaha Ténéré 700 and Ténéré 700 Rally (2019 to 2025) is made of aluminum and bolts on using the OEM mounting points, with hardware included. Make sure any guard you choose doesn't touch the radiator fins and doesn't block more airflow than necessary. If you're wondering whether a guard can cause overheating, we cover that question in detail in an upcoming guide.

Headlight Guard

The T7's front end is iconic, but its headlights sit high and forward, right where rocks thrown by a riding buddy's rear tire will land. A headlight guard for the Ténéré 700 (XT700Z, 2019 to 2023) protects the lenses without blocking the light pattern.

Hand Guards

Hand guards do two jobs: they protect your levers in a fall and they protect your hands from branches and wind. Our hand guards for the Yamaha Ténéré 700 (2019 to 2024) are a plastic set of two that bolts on with the supplied hardware, a good choice for wind and brush protection. If maximum lever protection in hard falls is your priority, look at wraparound guards with a metal backbone.

Engine Cover Guards

Even with crash bars, the lower engine cases can take hits from rocks and roots. An engine cover guard set for the Ténéré 700, T7 and T7 Rally is a pair of side covers that uses the OEM mounting points with no drilling. A cracked engine case means an oil leak, so this is a smart add-on for anyone riding rocky terrain. Check the fitment years on the product page before ordering.

The Small Parts Riders Forget

A Protection Plan by Budget

Essential

Radiator guard, hand guards and headlight guard. These three parts protect the most expensive and most exposed components for a modest budget.

Off-road ready

Add crash bars and an upgraded skid plate. This is the setup most T7 owners settle on once they start riding real trails.

Full armor

Add engine cover guards, chain guide protection and frame hole caps. This is for riders who travel far from help and can't afford a breakdown.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need crash bars on a Ténéré 700?

If you ride off-road, yes. The T7 is light for an adventure bike, but it will tip over on technical terrain, and crash bars prevent damage to the engine cases and plastics.

Do Ténéré 700 accessories fit all model years?

Not always. Many parts fit 2019 to 2024 bikes, but the 2025 model received updates. Always check the years listed on the product page.

Is the stock bash plate enough?

For gravel roads, usually. For rocky trails, ledges and log crossings, many riders upgrade to a larger skid plate.
