Why it makes a difference

Standing on the pegs changes where your leg sits. On technical trail sections your calf and boot end up much closer to the exhaust than they ever do on tarmac, and the stock shielding on the 450MT leaves a lot of pipe exposed. This heat shield covers that section so a moment of contact costs you nothing.

It matters just as much for luggage. Soft panniers, dry bags and tie-down straps sag toward the pipe once they are loaded, and a melted bag on day two of a trip is a problem you cannot fix at the roadside. The exhaust guard keeps that contact off the metal.
