Fork Leg Protectors for Yamaha MT-09, XSR900 and Tracer 900

The Fork Leg Protector Set is a straightforward, purpose-built solution for keeping the lower fork stanchions on your Yamaha naked bike looking and performing as they should. Machined stone chips, grit thrown up from the road surface, and general debris all take a toll on bare fork legs over time.

These ABS plastic fork guards bolt directly onto existing OEM mounting points, covering the most vulnerable section of your front forks without adding unnecessary bulk or requiring any permanent modification to the bike. If you ride regularly — whether commuting, touring, or weekend canyon work — this is one of the more cost-effective forms of preventative maintenance available.

Why Fork Leg Protection Matters

Fork stanchions are precision-ground, chrome-plated tubes manufactured to very tight tolerances. That smooth, polished surface is not just cosmetic — it is functional. The fork seals ride against it thousands of times per mile, and those seals are only as reliable as the surface they contact. A single piece of road debris, a stone thrown up at speed, or prolonged exposure to fine grit is enough to score or pit the stanchion surface. Once that damage is present, seal wear accelerates. The result is oil weeping past the seals, which leads to reduced damping performance, oil contamination of the front brake rotor, and eventually a full fork service that typically costs several hundred dollars in parts and labor.

For daily riders and high-mileage commuters, the risk is compounded simply by exposure. More miles on varied road surfaces means more opportunity for debris contact. Bikes used in urban environments face additional hazards from poorly maintained road surfaces, gravel at junctions, and construction zones. Fork guards create a physical barrier between the stanchion and the road environment, deflecting debris before it reaches the polished tube surface. The investment in protection is a fraction of the cost of a fork service, making this one of the more sensible accessories a practical rider can fit.

Installation

Fitting these fork guards is a straightforward process that does not require specialist tools or mechanical expertise beyond basic spanner work. The guards align with the OEM fork guard mounting bosses already present on the lower fork legs of all compatible models — the factory anticipated this type of accessory fitment when designing the mounting architecture.

Both the left and right guards come with all required fasteners in the kit. There is no need to remove the front wheel, loosen the axle, or disturb the brake system. Most riders complete the installation in approximately 15 minutes using standard hand tools. Fit one guard at a time, align the mounting tabs carefully before threading the fasteners, and torque to hand-tight plus a quarter turn — no specific torque figure is required, but avoid over-tightening into the plastic.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will this fit my MT-09 SP?

Yes. The Yamaha MT-09 SP shares the same lower fork leg architecture and OEM mounting points as the standard MT-09 across the 2018 to 2023 model years. The SP uses Öhlins fork internals, but the external fork leg casting and guard mounting bosses are identical to the standard model. These guards fit both variants without modification.

Do I need to remove the wheel to install it?

No. The guards mount to bosses on the lower fork legs and do not require the front wheel, axle, or brake caliper to be removed or disturbed. The process is entirely external to the wheel assembly. You will need access to the mounting points on each fork leg, which are accessible with the wheel in place and the bike on a paddock stand or center stand if one is fitted. A standard set of hex keys or a small socket set is all that is required.

What colors are available?

These fork guards are available in multiple color options, including finishes suited to both OEM Yamaha color schemes and popular aftermarket liveries. The available colors are displayed in the variant selector on this page. If you are planning to match a specific OEM color code or an aftermarket wrap, the guards can also be sanded and painted or wrapped with standard adhesive vinyl. ABS plastic accepts automotive-grade rattle can paint without a primer coat in most cases, though a light scuff with fine-grit sandpaper before painting will improve adhesion and finish quality.

Will it protect against a drop or low-side?

These fork guards are designed specifically to protect against road debris, stone chips, and environmental contamination during normal riding. They are not crash protection components and are not engineered to absorb the impact loads generated in a tip-over or low-side event. In a fall, the guard itself may be damaged or dislodged, and depending on the nature of the impact, the fork stanchion beneath could still sustain damage.

If slide and drop protection is a priority — particularly for track use, adventure riding, or urban environments with a higher risk of tip-overs — we recommend pairing these guards with dedicated frame sliders and crash protectors, which are engineered to manage and redirect impact energy in a fall scenario. The two products serve complementary but distinct functions.
