Why the Stock Hand Guards Are Not Enough

BMW's factory hand guards on the R1200GS and R1250GS are designed primarily as brush deflectors for off-road use: narrow, close-fitting shields that prevent branches and stones from hitting the lever assemblies. They were never intended to block frontal airflow. The gap between the guard and the handlebar leaves the top and front of each hand fully exposed, which is fine at trail speed but painful on a motorway in winter.

The wind deflector panels extend the guard surface forward and upward, closing the gap where wind enters. At 0.56 kg for the pair, they add no perceptible weight to the front end and do not interfere with lever reach, throttle operation, or full-lock steering in either direction.

Installation

Bolt-on installation in under 15 minutes with basic tools. Remove the screw(s) securing the stock BMW hand guard to the handlebar mount, position the deflector panel against the guard, align the pre-drilled holes, insert the supplied screws and washers, and tighten. Repeat on the opposite side. Check for clearance at full lock in both directions. No drilling, no cutting, no permanent modification to your motorcycle. All mounting hardware is included.
