Radiator Guard for Honda CB500X, CB400X, NX500 and NX400 (2019–2025)

This radiator guard is a protective grille that mounts directly in front of the radiator on the Honda CB500X, CB400X, NX500, and NX400, intercepting road debris, stone chips, and off-road material before it can reach the thin aluminium radiator fins. A single stone strike at speed is enough to permanently deform the fins in the impact zone, and deformed fins reduce the radiator's cooling efficiency by restricting airflow through the core. The guard prevents this from happening without requiring any modification to the bike.

The CB500X and NX500 are used in conditions where radiator damage is a genuine risk: gravel roads, dual-sport sections, and mixed-surface adventure riding all produce stone chip events that are unavoidable at normal riding speeds. Even on paved roads, debris thrown by trucks and gravel sitting on road edges regularly reaches the radiator at highway speeds. The CB400X and NX400 are lighter commuter and touring machines that share the same exposed radiator position, and urban riding in traffic with loose road surfaces creates the same risk on a smaller scale.

Radiator Fin Damage and Why It Matters

The cooling fins on a liquid-cooled motorcycle radiator are typically 0.1–0.15mm thick aluminium, spaced 2–3mm apart across the radiator face. They are designed to transfer heat efficiently but are not built to withstand impact of any kind. A 5mm stone travelling at 60 mph carries enough energy to bend several adjacent fins flat against the core, creating a patch where air cannot pass through, and the radiator continues to function but with a permanently reduced effective cooling area.

On a hot day or at low speed, that reduced capacity can raise operating temperature above the target range, placing additional load on the cooling system during the conditions that already demand the most from it. Fins that are bent can sometimes be straightened with a fin comb tool, but the process is time-consuming and does not fully restore the original geometry. A radiator guard that prevents the damage entirely is a more practical approach than repairing it after the fact, and at the cost of a guard versus a partial radiator repair or full radiator replacement, the economics are straightforward.

On the CB500X and NX500 in particular, where the bike is regularly used on loose or gravel surfaces, fin damage accumulates progressively over a riding season without a guard in place — each individual strike may appear minor, but the combined effect across the radiator face is a measurable reduction in cooling performance.

Airflow and Cooling

A well-designed radiator guard uses an open mesh or grille pattern that allows the majority of air to pass through to the radiator core. The mesh aperture is sized to intercept stones and debris while blocking as little airflow as possible, and the guard does not create a sealed barrier or trap heat against the core between the guard face and the radiator fins.

Under normal riding conditions — moving at speed with ambient air flowing through the guard — the temperature penalty from fitting a guard is not measurable in real-world operating conditions. The design is not a compromise between protection and cooling performance; it is intended to deliver both simultaneously across the range of conditions these bikes are used in.

In the most demanding conditions — sustained slow off-road riding in high ambient temperatures — a guard with a dense mesh pattern may cause a marginal temperature increase. The operating range of the Honda CB500X engine allows for this without reaching a critical threshold under normal use, and the practical benefit of protection against stone damage outweighs the theoretical disadvantage of marginal airflow restriction for the type of riding the CB500X, NX500, CB400X, and NX400 are designed for.

Fitment and Installation — Honda CB500X, CB400X, NX500, NX400 (2019–2025)

This guard is designed for the Honda CB500X (2019–2025), CB400X (2019–2025), NX500 (2023–2025), and NX400 (2023–2025), all of which share a compatible radiator mounting interface. It bolts to the existing radiator mounting hardware using the supplied fasteners and does not require drilling into the frame, fairing, or radiator at any point during installation.

Installation takes approximately 15–20 minutes with basic hand tools and is fully reversible — the guard can be removed for maintenance or cleaning without leaving any permanent mark on the bike. All hardware required to complete the installation across all four compatible models is included in the kit.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will the guard raise the operating temperature of the engine?

Under normal riding conditions the temperature effect of fitting a guard is not significant. The open mesh or grille design allows the majority of air to pass through to the radiator core, and the Honda CB500X and related models have sufficient thermal headroom in their cooling systems to tolerate the marginal airflow reduction a guard introduces. In sustained slow off-road riding in very high ambient temperatures, a slight temperature increase may be measurable, but this is within the design parameters of the cooling system for the conditions these bikes are used in.

Does it fit the NX500 and NX400, or only the CB-series?

This guard fits all four models: CB500X, CB400X, NX500, and NX400, covering the 2019–2025 model years across the range. The NX500 and NX400 were introduced in 2023 and use the same radiator mounting interface as the CB-series bikes they share their core architecture with. The supplied hardware covers all four models without modification or adaptation.

Is the guard stainless steel or aluminium?

The guard uses a stainless steel mesh construction, which provides corrosion resistance and maintains its appearance in wet and off-road conditions without requiring a protective coating. Stainless steel mesh is the standard material for this application because it resists deformation under repeated stone impact better than aluminium mesh and does not corrode when exposed to road salt, water, and mud over multiple riding seasons.
