Yamaha MT-09 Crash Protection: Frame Sliders, Axle Sliders & Radiator Guard

Front and rear axle crash sliders for the Yamaha MT-09

The Yamaha MT-09 is a naked bike with a big personality: a punchy triple, upright ergonomics and nothing but a few plastic covers between the engine and the pavement if things go wrong. That's exactly why owners search for MT-09 frame sliders, axle sliders and radiator guards before almost anything else.

This guide covers the crash protection that makes sense on the MT-09, how the different parts work together and how to choose by model year.

MT-09 Generations: Check Your Year First

Protection parts are model-year specific, so start here:

  • 2014 to 2020: first and second generation MT-09 (sold as the FZ-09 in the US for the early years) with the 847cc triple.
  • 2021 onward: third generation with the larger 890cc triple, a new frame and new bodywork.

Frame sliders, crash bars and radiator guards almost never fit across these two generations.

Where an MT-09 Hits the Ground

On a naked bike, there's no full fairing to absorb a fall. In a typical low-side, the contact points are:

  1. The bar ends and levers.
  2. The engine side covers and frame.
  3. The front axle and fork bottoms.
  4. The rear axle, swingarm and exhaust.

Good protection covers as many of these points as possible.

Frame Sliders on the MT-09

Frame sliders bolt into the engine mounts and stick out just enough to touch the ground before the engine and frame. On the MT-09, they're the most searched protection part, and for street riders who mainly worry about low-side slides, they're a good choice.

What to look for:

  • No-cut design: on the MT-09 there's little bodywork to cut, but check anyway.
  • Bolt quality: sliders replace engine mount bolts, so they must be high-grade steel.
  • Replaceable pucks: after a crash, you can replace the puck instead of the whole slider.

For 2021 and newer bikes, our engine crash protectors for the MT-09 and Tracer 9 (2021 to 2026) use this frame-slider design and bolt into the engine mounts with no modification.

If you're torn between sliders and full bars, read our crash bars vs frame sliders guide first.

Engine Crash Bars: More Coverage for Daily Riders

If you commute, tour or park on gravel and slopes, the most likely "crash" is a slow tip-over, not a slide at speed. In that case, full engine crash bars offer more coverage than sliders, because they spread the load across several mounting points. If you go that route, choose bars made specifically for your model year and check that they don't interfere with your feet on the pegs.

Axle Sliders: Protect the Front and Rear

Frame sliders and crash bars protect the middle of the bike, but not the ends. Axle sliders thread through the axles and protect the fork legs, brake calipers and swingarm in a slide. They are inexpensive and easy to install.

Our front and rear axle crash sliders for the Yamaha MT-09 (2014 to 2023) are designed to protect the front and rear of the bike. Combined with frame sliders, they help cover the main contact points from front to rear. Check the product page for exact fitment.

Radiator Guard

The MT-09's radiator is exposed and sits right behind the front wheel. Road debris and gravel can damage the fins or puncture the core. A guard is cheap insurance, and it also gives the front of the bike a cleaner look.

For 2014 to 2019 bikes, see our radiator guard cover for the MT-09 / MT-09 SP / FZ-09 / XSR900. If you're wondering whether a guard affects cooling, our motorcycle radiator guard guide answers that question.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are MT-09 frame sliders worth it?

Yes, especially for street riders. They're inexpensive compared to a new radiator, side covers or a frame repair.

Do axle sliders work without frame sliders?

They protect different parts. Axle sliders protect the forks, calipers and swingarm. For full coverage, combine them with frame sliders or crash bars.

Do 2021+ MT-09 parts fit older bikes?

Usually not. The 2021 redesign changed the frame and engine, so always check the years listed.
